Mosaic by Leslie Dulin
In-Town Gallery will present Tesserae, the mixed media creations of Leslie J. Dulin, during October.
Review for Tesserae:
The richly decorated, non-representational surfaces invite the viewer to pierce the veil of emotion surrounding the printed, collaged, stamped, quilted, and painted layers.
A First Friday reception for the artist will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Ms. Dulin credits Byzantine mosaics and contemporary art quilts with much of the inspiration for her current body of work. “I am interested in the techniques quilters use to break up and recombine fabric patterns through piecing,” said Ms. Dulin. Her color choices, the repetitive square patterns, and the use of metallic gold echo the palette of the Near East, but Ms. Dulin says that the arts community in and around Chattanooga has exerted its influence as well. In particular, Anne Bagby and Sandra Paynter Washburn are both friends and mentors who have encouraged and inspired her along the way.
The Signal Mountain artist has built on a traditional art school (BFA, U of Georgia) and workshop-aided education to emerge with her own artistic voice as a contemporary pattern and design artist.
Ms. Dulin’s mixed media exhibit will continue through the month of October at In-Town Gallery. Founded in 1974, the 35-year-old In-Town Gallery is considered one of the oldest cooperative art galleries in the nation.
