Kenneth McKay
Kenneth Robert McKay, of Harrison, died on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the age of 85.
Ken was born August 8, 1926 in Cleveland, Tn., to the late Paul and Maude McKay. A 1944 graduate of Bradley Central High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Before and after his Navy service, he was employed at Cooke’s Food Market.
Ken began in business by opening the first supermarket in Cleveland, Broad Street Food Market. After moving to Chattanooga in 1955, he owned By-Rite Food King, and later Southeastern Meats of Tennessee and Ace Hardware in East Brainerd.
An active member of Harrison United Methodist Church, he was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Cleveland Lodge # 134 and Alhambra Shrine.
Ken enjoyed boating, fishing and spending time with friends and family. He delivered Meals On Wheels for 15 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Paul and Maude Leatherwood McKay, and a brother, Raymond McKay.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn McKay; daughters, Sharon (Tommy) Turner and Vicki Chandler; sons, Rodney (Essie) Nance and Todd (Tammy) Nance; granddaughters: Kristin Fults, Amy (Bo) Kelley, Holly Chandler and Kara Turner; great-granddaughter, McKaylyn Fults; three nephews; and special friends, Tommy Evans and LeBron Hollingsworth.
The family will receive friends at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, January 2, and on Tuesday, January 3, from 12-1 p.m. at Harrison United Methodist Church.
Ken’s funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, at Harrison United Methodist Church, 5621 Highway 58, with the Reverend Tom Hancock officiating. Interment service with military honors will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
