A two-alarm apartment fire on Saturday morning displaced two families on Grove Street.

At 7:28 a.m., residents from an adjacent apartment building noticed thick black smoke and fire coming from the second story of the unit at 1209 Grove St. and placed a call to 911, triggering a response from the Chattanooga Fire Department. All residents were reported to be out of the apartment as downtown fire companies arrived to find the second story on fire as reported. The fire was quickly brought under control.

A family of four lived in the upper apartment and a mother and daughter in the adjoining unit.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were called in to provide assistance to these families.

An estimate on the dollar loss was not available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
