Lee Tennis Sweeps Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Lee University tennis teams continued their winning ways with a sweep of NCAA Div. II Carson-Newman College. The Lady Flames (3-0) won 9-0 and the Flames (2-1) collected a 6-3 win Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Flames won the No. 1 (Tonya Walters/Kelsey Gray) and No. 2 (Tarah Garner/Annie Sandberg) doubles by the same margin, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Stephanie Todd and Christy North teamed up to defeat Katie Brown and Devon Jennings, 8-5.

Lee won all six of the singles matches in straight sets. Walters knocked off Kylie Elliott (6-1, 6-3) and Gray beat Jen Ott (6-2, 6-3). Garner lost just one game (6-0, 6-1) on her way to take down Erin Green.

Sandberg won her first set over Katie Brown, 7-6, after winning the tie-breaker, 8-6. Sandberg laid claim to the match win with a 6-2 score in the second set.

Todd and Jodie Rice each won their first set, 6-2. Todd finished off Megan Wilson with a 6-4 second set and Rice finished the sweep with a 6-3 score in the second set.

In the men’s match, Lee took a 3-0 lead after the conclusion of doubles action. Michael Yokosuk and Richard Gamble defeated Paul Birdsong and Warren McClure, 8-5. Patrick Kim teamed with Renan Molineiro to beat Dusty Davis and Derek Holdway, 8-4. Flavio Costa and Kevin Tan took down Austin Mackay and Garret Duron, 8-5.

Yokosuk won at No. 1 singles over Davis, 6-3 and 6-2. Kim trounced Derek Holdway at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Gamble dropped his first set 6-3, recovered to win the second set, 6-4, and won his singles match with a 12-10 super tie-breaker.

Carson-Newman (1-1) claimed the final three singles matches. Birdsong defeated Molineiro at No. 4 singles, 7-5 and 6-0. At No. 5 singles, Costa won the first set 6-0, dropped the second set 4-6 and was finally defeated 10-6 in a super tie-breaker. Duron claimed a walkover win after leading 5-1 in the first set over Fabio Medina.

The tennis teams will next see action on March 2nd, when they host SSAC rival Auburn University Montgomery.
