EPB Says Scammers Are Targeting Customers

  • Thursday, October 17, 2013

EPB officials said they want to ensure all of EPB customers’ accounts and personal information remain safe as a widespread scam reaches Chattanooga.

Several business customers have reported to EPB they have gotten calls from people claiming to be with EPB and that immediate payment must be made to prevent their power from being disconnected. The imposter instructs the customer to purchase a MoneyPak (reloadable debit card) at Wal Mart, Walgreens, CVS or Rite Aid, and then call back with the account number from the card.

This is a scam. EPB never calls customers asking for payments to be made with pre-paid debit cards.

Similar incidents have also been reported in Knoxville, Nashville and in Alabama. The Better Business Bureau has issued an alert, which can be viewed at http://www.bbb.org/blog/2013/04/hang-up-on-new-utility-bill-phone-scam/  Report any incidents like this at 648-1372.
