Seven new scholarships will be awarded to Dalton State students at this year’s Scholarship Day program scheduled for Friday, April 19. Last spring, the Dalton State Foundation awarded 122 scholarships to 115 students; scholarships recognize academic merit or financial need of students.

“More than that, however, they are reminders of the invaluable role private philanthropy plays at a public institution like Dalton State,” said David Elrod, Director of Institutional Advancement for the College.

“We are proud of each of our scholarship donors, past and present, whose generosity has enabled the Foundation’s Scholarship Day Program,” Elrod said. “It’s an occasion for the students who applied for and competed for these awards, and it’s a time for celebration as we publicly acknowledge the many gifts for student scholarships that have been entrusted to us through endowment funds or Dalton State Annual Fund gifts from our donors.”

The “Bunco for the Cure” Scholarship is given by the Bunco Babes of Dalton in support of Dalton State’s Radiologic Technology program. The club advocates for breast cancer screening and has provided this award for a student wishing to work in that field.

The Dalton Parks & Recreation Scholarship is supported by the Softball Players Association for students majoring in a service-related program of study.

The David E. Pennington III ’74 Scholarship is endowed by the friends and family of Dalton mayor and Dalton State alumnus David Pennington on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

The Ken Cyree ’88 Scholarship in Business is sustained by an annual gift from Dalton State alumnus Ken Cyree. Dr. Cyree is Dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of Mississippi, where he is also the Frank R. Day/Mississippi Bankers Association Chair of Banking and Professor of Finance.

The Kevin R. Doheny Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics and Science was endowed by friends and family of the late Kevin Doheny, Associate Professor of Mathematics at Dalton State.

The Micah Dembele Scholarship in Nursing is supported by an annual gift from Dr. Cordia Starling, former Dean of the School of Health Professions at Dalton State, in honor of her granddaughter.

The Price-Werling Scholarship in Education is provided by Professor of Psychology Dr. Christy Price from a portion of the prize money from her U.S. Professor of the Year Award by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.
