Sixth Annual Chattanooga Jewish Film Series Starts May 22

Six Jewish-themed, award-winning films produced in Israel, and the U.S. will be shown on five consecutive Wednesdays evenings at 7 p.m. beginning May 22 at the Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road. These films are suitable for those 16 and older.

The series schedule is as follows: 

May 22: A Bottle in the Gaza Sea
Following the bombing of a local café, the 17 year-old daughter of French immigrants to Israel throws a bottle into the sea near Gaza with a message asking for an explanation, When a 20 year-old Palestinian boy discovers the bottles and tries to answer her question via e-mail, they develop a friendship. This 111 minute film is in Hebrew with English subtitles. 

May 29: Making Trouble
A documentary about six of the greatest female comic performers of the last century: Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Riversm Gilda Ratner, and Wendy Wasserstein.  The film is hosted by four of today’s funniest women; Judy Gold, Jackie Hoffman, Cory Kahaney, and Jessica Kirson. Giggle your way into finding out what it means to be Jewish, female and funny.  This 85 minute film is in English. 

June 5: The World is Funny
This film follows the wanderings of and connections between a network of characters, As they struggle in this “dramedy” it becomes clear that there are times when the best response to life is, The world is so funny, so I laugh.”  This 112 minute film is in Hebrew with English subtitles.   

June 12: Hava Nagila (The Movie)
This documentary is about the history of the great Jewish standard. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Regina Spektor and more, the film follows the party song from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the kibbutzim of Palestine to the cul-de-sacs of the United States. This 75 minute film is in English.  

June 19: The Other Son
Two boys, one Israeli and one Palestinian, born the same night during a bombing attack discover at 18 that they were switched at birth by mistake. As the boys become friends, their families have to reevaluate their beliefs and resistance to each others’ cultures. This 105 minute film is in French, Hebrew, and Arabic with English subtitles.
