Work may begin this summer on a new four-lane highway that will go from Highway 58 at Clark Road to the Volkswagen Plant.

The new road will cross the middle of a 52-acre wetland, City Engineer Bill Payne said.

He said the entire wetland will be preserved under a conservation easement. He said the tract includes a number of different type water birds, beavers, deer and other wildlife.

Bids will be open for the project on May 24.

Current estimated cost is approximately $6.5 million.

The project length is 1.360 miles, and the completion time is on or before the end of September next year.
