UTC Soccer Falls To Furman In Regular Season Road Finale

  • Sunday, October 19, 2014

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- UTC fell 9-0 to Furman Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Field in Southern Conference women’s soccer action. Chattanooga falls to 1-14-1 overall and 0-7 in league play, while the Paladins improve to 10-3-2 on the year and 4-1-2 against the SoCon.

The Mocs held off the Paladins, not allowing any early goals and allowed just two in the second half. Freshman keeper Hannah Dunn (Cookeville, Tenn.) grabbed nine saves in the game with just two in the second half while the Mocs defense blocked two goals at the line.

“I’m more impressed with the first 25 minutes or so,” UTC head coach J.D. Kyzer said. “We talked about holding them off and put in a different system. It held them off for a while. That’s the best we’ve played in a few games, but Furman has been one of the best teams in the conference for a while, so it was hard to hold them off for long.

The Paladins got their first goal from Carlie Crouch in the 23rd minute to open the scoring. Jamie Alexander scored all four of her goals in the first half while Hannah Stanifer and Stephanie DeVita each added one for a 7-0 halftime advantage.

“We told them to put the first half behind us,” Kyzer said. “We had a tough game at Wofford. I told them to put it behind them and just play.

“Everybody executed their rolls. There were a lot more positive minutes in this game than in the last even though the score is not indicative of that.”

Alyssa Althoff scored her goal almost 11 minutes into the half and it would be nearly 35 minutes before Furman would get to the net again with Willough Davis heading in her first goal of the year with 10 seconds on the clock. India Robinson, Rachel Shah and DeVita had three assists each for the Paladins.

Senior Melanie Arredondo (Tampico, Mexico) and juniors Skylar Brewer (Farragut, Tenn.) and Loryn Queen (Lanesville, Ind.) each got off one shot for the Mocs with two on goal. Dunn’s nine saves puts her one save shy of Chattanooga’s single season top 10 list with 103 on the year.

Furman had 34 shots with 20 on goal. Keeper Holly Reilly made two saves and the Paladins had nine corner kicks to none for Chattanooga.

The Mocs host SoCon newcomer Mercer Friday at 7 p.m. and on Sunday will honor its seniors prior to the 1 p.m. match against The Citadel for the season finale.
