Volhein, Bessie Thomas (Dalton)

Bessie Thomas Volhein, 82, of Dalton, GA, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3, 2014 surrounded by her family at Hamilton Medical Center.

Bessie moved to Dalton in 1969, when her husband became manager at Cannon’s Department Store. She worked at Dalton High School as a Para Pro for many years before retiring and was a loyal member of the Dalton First Baptist Curch, where she loved to be a volunteer. She went on several mission trips and at times, worked with the nursery, Meals on Wheels and Soul Food.

She was the daughter of the late Walter and Leona Thmas; and was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ralph, Harris and Mac; and sisters, Mae, Alma Grey, Mabel, Anna Bell and Polly.

Bessie is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Herman Volhein of Dalton; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Clarence Graham of Dalton and Cindy and Craig Welch of Carrollton, GA; sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Volhein of Dalton and John and Robin Volhein of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Amy and Douglas Harbin of Williamston, N.C., Cara Welch Herzog and Matt and Cory Welch all of Carrollton, GA, Haley Volhein of Denver, CO, Carly Welch of Carrollton, Courtney Volhein of Douglas, GA and Dylan Volhein of Chattanooga; great- grandson, Lucas Pratt; great-granddaughters, Lily Pratt and Ava Grace Harbin; step-grandchildren, Warren Graham and Brandy Graham Eldridge; sisters, Helen and Bertie Lee; nieces and nephews; and “VERY” special friend, Cindy Burton.

Services will be Monday, October 6 at 3 p.m. at the Dalton First Baptist Church with the Dr. Bill J. Ireland, Jr. and the Rev. Phillip Cannon officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday, October 6 in the Atrium of the church from 1 to 3 p.m.

The family requests that flowers please be omitted and memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 827, Dalton, GA 30722-0827.
