Georgia Northwestern Secures Thousands For Adult Education

Grants For Testing Fees, Transportation Now Available

  • Thursday, November 13, 2014

Georgia Northwestern’s Department of Adult Education has secured $8,700 in grants to help pay GED testing fees and transportation costs for many adult learners across Northwest Georgia.

The North Georgia Electric Membership Foundation has awarded GNTC’s Adult Education program $7,500 to help students with the expense of GED testing. Funds will be used to provide full or partial scholarships to students in need who have displayed commitment to earning their GED. All funding is expected to help the GED student transition to employment or post-secondary education.

North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation raises money through its foundation for non-profit charities it supports with the help of its customers through Operation Round-Up. Customers have the option of rounding up their monthly electric bill to the nearest dollar. The difference is donated by the foundation to the charities they support. No administration costs come out of those donations. NGEMC provides that labor free of charge. Donations through a monthly electric bill with NGEMC are tax deductible.

The second grant obtained by GNTC’s Adult Education program is the “Overcoming Transportation Barriers to Literacy in Whitfield County” Grant. This award of $1,200 was made possible by Dalton-Whitfield Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia. The money will help purchase coupon books for round-trip fares from the Whitfield County Transit Service. The books will be provided to students who are without transportation necessary to attend GED classes.

These grants require the student to meet certain criteria before being declared eligible for benefits. For more information, contact the Georgia Northwestern Technical College Department of Adult Education at any one of the centers located in Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Polk, Walker, or Whitfield County, Georgia. Visit GNTC.edu or call the college at 866.983-GNTC (4682).
