More than 200 high school juniors and seniors from across Northwest Georgia, as well as many of their parents, counselors, and teachers, were on hand Thursday for the 2015 Transition Fair at Georgia Northwestern Technical College on the college’s Walker County Campus.

The fair is organized by the Catoosa and Walker County Parent Mentors to help students with special needs, as well as their families and support groups, to prepare for life after high school. In addition to the 200-plus high schoolers, more than 100 teachers, parents, vendors, and school administrators were on hand to share information and answer questions.

Georgia Northwestern administrators spoke with the students on a wide-variety of topics ranging from how to apply for financial aid to programs available on campus and online through the college.

Upperclassmen from Chattooga, Dade County, Gordon Lee, Heritage, LaFayette, Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Ridgeland, Ringgold, and Trion High Schools toured the Walker County, Georgia campus for most of the morning. Students personally toured the Automotive Technology, Business Technology, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Machine Tool, Nursing, Surgical Technology, and Welding programs during their visit. Other programs set-up booths for the students to explore.

Vendors were able to share materials and answer questions on real-life scenarios awaiting the students after high school. From how to enroll in college, to finding the right one, to getting employment, to becoming a successful member of society, the fair helps the students learn what they need to know to take the next step in their lives.

GNTC will host another Transition Fair on the college’s Floyd County Campus in Rome, Ga. on Nov. 13.  For more information on Transition Fairs, you can contact Sheila Parker with Georgia Northwestern’s Disability Services office at 706-295-6517.
