On Tuesday the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will transport adoptable dogs from McMinn Regional Humane Society to the the Virginia Beach SPCA and the Roanoke Valley SPCA for adoption.
The transport is part of the ASPCA’s Nancy Silverman Rescue Ride program, which aims to save thousands of dogs over the course of three years by transporting them from overcrowded shelters in the Southeast to give them the best chance of finding loving homes in the Northeast. The dogs are being transported safely in a new custom-built animal relocation vehicle operated by the ASPCA.
This is one of several transports the ASPCA plans to conduct with McMinn Regional Humane Society as part of the program.
Three of these dogs come from special circumstances; a new program from the McMinn Regional Humane Society that places dogs at risk of euthanasia due to space with their local jail to create an inmate-based foster care program for five of their animals at a time. Three of these inmate-fostered dogs will be making the transport to find permanent homes on Tuesday, along with 9-10 additional dogs.
“We are excited to collaborate with the Virginia Beach SPCA to give these dogs a second chance at the loving home they all deserve,” said Michelle Cascio, director of the ASPCA’s animal relocation and transport program. “We are looking forward to continuing to work together to save more lives through animal relocation.”
