The Dalton Public Safety Commission included the confirmation vote for two new Dalton Police Department officers at Tuesday morning’s meeting. Officers Andrew Sell and Coleman Jenkins were both confirmed by a unanimous 3-0 vote of the commission (PSC members Carlos Calderin and Terry Mathis were unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting). Both officers recently graduated from the regional police academy in Cherokee County.
Officer Sell comes to the Dalton Police Department from Ohio where he was most recently employed as an officer with the Ball State University Police Department. He also previously served as a part-time deputy with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office in Celina, Oh. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Wright State University in Celina.
Officer Jenkins graduated in 2011 from the Whitfield County Career Academy. He served the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office from February 2012 until December 2013 and comes to the DPD after working with Shaw Industries.
Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the Dalton Fire Department promoted Captain Steve Hollingsworth to the rank of Battalion Chief. The promotion was approved by a 3-0 vote of the PSC.
Capt. Hollingsworth’s promotion fills the vacancy left by the promotion of Todd Pangle to Deputy Fire Chief. He has served as Acting Battalion Chief of A Shift since March.
Capt. Hollingsworth has served the DFD since April 1987 and has steadily risen through the ranks. He was promoted to Captain of A Shift in May 2012.
Capt. Hollingsworth is a certified Georgia Smoke Diver and is a member of the DFD’s Special Operations Team. He holds multiple instructor certifications and previously served a vital role in the opening of Fire Stations 3, 4, and 5.
