STEP, Inc. Presents The Next STEP: IEP Planning Workshop

  • Tuesday, August 25, 2015

STEP, Inc. will present the Next STEP:  IEP Planning and Instructionally Appropriate IEP’s for Parents and Professionals Workshop on Saturday.

Those with a child with a disability or professionals working with children who need special education, are invited to participate in the workshop.  STEP, Inc. (Support and Training for Exceptional Parents) is helping parents learn about their child's education needs and rights provided under IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).  STEP is a federally funded program that provides information, training and support to parents of children with disabilities.

This specialized workshop is designed to enable participants to understand and fully participate in the Individualized Education Planning (IEP) Team process.

Participants will learn:

The types of services that can be provided through “special education” services.

The information on the Individual Education Program (IEP) document and where it goes.

How to express parent concerns and ensure they are addressed by the IEP team.

Understand the process to set and write Measurable Annual Goals.

Strategies to prepare for effective participation in IEP meetings for their children and youth with disabilities.

This is a free hands-on workshop that is designed for parents and professionals who have attended the STEP Basic Introduction to Special Education Workshop and are now ready for the Next STEP--fine tuning the IEP document to reflect the unique needs of children with disabilities to lead toward positive educational outcomes.

The workshop will be held at LifeLine, 1400 McCallie Ave., Suite 112 in Chattanooga on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.   All parents and professionals in the area are welcome to attend.  Register by calling LifeLine at 622-4007, email registration@lifelinefamilies.org or call Beth Smith at 800-280-7837 or 639-0125, ext. 17 or email her at beth.smith@tnstep.org, as the workshop seating is limited.  Please note, child care will not be provided.

STEP also provides help over the telephone with specific questions.  Parents who ask to be put on the mailing list will receive the quarterly newsletter STEP Ahead.  All these services are free to parents who have a child with a disability.  Workshop materials will be available for purchase by professionals.

For more information call the training coordinator at 639-0125, ext. 17 or the Parent Information Line at  1(800) 280-STEP (7837).
