The Road Home: The 152nd Anniversary Of The Battle Of Chickamauga Is Sept. 18-20

  • Friday, August 28, 2015
Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a series of special programs commemorating the 152nd anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga from Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20.

In the late summer of 1865 the United States was reunited after four years of war, but the struggle was far from over. Americans, North and South, struggled to bind the nation’s wounds and thousands of soldiers entered a difficult transition back to civilian life. This year, visitors will be transported back to a year when soldiers embarked on that long and sometimes lonely journey home.

Visitors are encouraged to participate in living history presentations, artillery demonstrations, and tours exploring the challenges faced by the veterans of Chickamauga in 1865. In addition, park staff will lead guided hikes and caravan tours focusing on the Battle of Chickamauga, which occurred in 1863. As a reminder, program participants are encouraged to dress comfortably for the weather and to bring a bottle of water.

For a detailed schedule of events, including program locations and times, visit http://go.nps.gov/chickamauga152 or contact the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at
706-866-9241 or the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center at 423-821-7786.
