The GPS Bruiser bowlers are region champs
The GPS bowling team claimed the region championship on Tuesday with an impressive 23-4 defeat of Harpeth Hall. This marks the 5th consecutive year that GPS has won region.
Although all of the bowlers provided strong, consistent competition, according to assistant coach Courtney Tallant, there were several highlights. Senior Alli Standefer made a strong showing with scores of 155 and 146; Blakely Reid converted an exciting 6, 7, 9 split in her second game. Su Bei bowled a turkey in her game, ending the game with a 153, and Emily Large had a great game of a 147.
Four Bruisers have qualified for the individuals competition at the upcoming state tournament: Alyson Parris, Blakely Reid, Kaliya Ware, and Meagan Scott. The team will head up for the state tournament Thursday, Jan. 21. Semis and finals are on Saturday, Jan. 23 at the lanes in Smyrna, Tennessee.
In other bowling news, Head Coach David McGowan has received another award from the National Federation of State High School Associations for his contribution to high school athletics. Coach McGowan has been selected to receive the 2015 South Sectional Coach of the Year award for Girls Bowling. The Southern section includes the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. NFHS annually recognizes coaches who demonstrate excellence in coaching on the state, sectional, and national level. Coach McGowan was named the Tennessee recipient of the Coach of the Year award in the fall.
