  • Saturday, January 30, 2016

Police shot and killed a Rossville man early Saturday morning after he fired at another man, then fired at officers.

Jose Alegre, 64, was shot and killed.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling the probe of the incident involving officers from Walker County and Catoosa County.

Around 6:15 p.m. Friday, the Walker County Sheriff's Office and Catoosa County Sheriff's Office responded to a 911 call of a shooting at a Sheila Gail Lane residence near the county line.

A propone company employee called police saying that after he was dispatched to the home that Alegre became irate and threatened to shoot him if he did not leave.

He said Alegre began firing at him as he was leaving. He was not injured.

SWAT teams were called out after Alegre barricaded himself in his home. He did not respond to numerous attempts to get him to come out.

The GBI said the SWAT team used gas around 12:30 p.m. and Alegre responded with gunfire.

He fired again when officers attempted to storm the residence at 1:45 a.m. Officers returned fire and he was killed.

No officers were injured.

The body was to be taken to GBI headquarters at Decatur for an autopsy.
