Money has been given to the city of Red Bank from Volkswagen because the city purchased a fleet of diesel Passats which are involved in an emissions scandal.

This “goodwill package” is in the amount of $7,000. It will be divided evenly with $3,500 to be place in the police department budget for automobile repair and maintenance and the other $3,500 will be put into the general fund for supplies.

Officials said on Monday night a fire at White Oak Park did extensive damage to the bathrooms. Mr. Smith appealed to all citizens to alert the police department if they see suspicious activity. He said it could turn out to be nothing important, but it may end up helping to deter problems.

Officers and firefighters with the Red Bank Police and Fire Departments responded to the park at 798 Ben Miller Parkway at approximately 10 p.m. after reports of a large fire at the public restrooms.

The building seemed to have caught flame after a trash receptacle near the building was set on fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze before the building became fully involved but a significant amount of damage was incurred.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The police department asks that if any citizen has information pertaining to the cause of the fire or possible persons responsible, that you contact Detective Noojin at 423 875-0167 Ext. 2123.

Red Bank has received two grants to be used for the fire and police departments. A grant in the amount of $2,136 from the Tennessee Municipal League Risk Pool will be used for driver safety. To accept this money, the city will be required to match the amount, resulting in a total of $4,271 that will be utilized by the Red Bank Fire Department to buy five backup cameras and two for the police department.

At the commission meeting Tuesday night, a vote was unanimous to accept a 2015 Homeland Security Grant that will be appropriated in the amount of $4,000, with no match required, to buy a two-way communication radio for the fire department.

On second and final reading, property at 2417 Ashmore Ave. was rezoned from R-2 Residential Zone to R-T/Z Townhouse-Zero Lot Line Residential. There was no opposition to the zoning change for the two lots involved and it came to the commission with approval of the planning committee.

The commission gave authorization for the disposal of surplus property held by the police department. City Manager Randall Smith said these vehicles will most likely be auctioned at Gov.deals.

The Red Bank Beer Board, made up of the board of commissioners, met prior to the commission meeting. A beer license was given to the convenience store Red Bank Quick Stop, which is located at 3515 Dayton Blvd. The business has recently changed ownership. Police Chief Tim Christol checked references and has done a background check and recommended that the permit be issued.
