Lee Third In Gulf South All-Sports Trophy

  • Saturday, May 14, 2016
In its very first year of being eligible to compete for regular season and conference championships in the Gulf South Conference, Lee University placed third in the overall standings for the GSC All-Sports Trophy.

West Florida finished atop the overall standings, compiling a record 89.500 total points which was 10 points more than second-place West Alabama.

UWA squeaked out second-place in the overall standings by clipping Lee, 79.500-78.375.
North Alabama (75.875) and Alabama Huntsville (66.000) rounded out the Top Five, followed by Valdosta State (63.625), Shorter (60.250), West Georgia (59.750), Delta State (49.500), Union (44.250) and Christian Brothers (28.875).

“What a great finish to our first year in the Gulf South Conference,” noted Lee athletic director Larry Carpenter. “We knew coming in that the GSC was one of the toughest conferences in NCAA Division II. Our goal was to be in the top half. To finish as high as we did is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaches and student-athletes.

“Of course none of this would be possible without the leadership and support of our president and administration,” Carpenter added.

West Florida continued its Women’s All-Sports dominance, stretching its GSC-best streak to 11 trophies, via its 12th honor in the last 13 years.

The Lady Flames earned a second-place finish in its first season of eligibility thanks to 36.125 points.  Joining Lee in the Top Five were North Alabama (34.750), West Alabama (32.125) and Alabama Huntsville (30.875).  Shorter earned sixth-place (29.875) followed by Valdosta State (29.375), Union (28.125), West Georgia (25.125), Delta State (21.000) and Christian Brothers (14.000).

UWF claimed its first Men’s Trophy since sharing honors with VSU in 2012-13 via 35.750 points.  Overall, the Argonauts have earned six Men’s awards dating back to 1997-98.

Alabama Huntsville logged a second-place effort at 33.625, followed by North Alabama (32.375) and West Alabama (31.750).  Lee (30.500) completed the Top Five, followed by West Georgia (30.125), Valdosta State (29.750), Delta State (27.000), Shorter (21.250), Union (15.000) and Christian Brothers (11.875).

The Conference will present the All-Sports Trophies at its Annual Awards Banquet, Thursday, June 2, at the Hilton Pensacola Beach in Pensacola Beach, Fla.  At that time, the GSC will also recognize its "Top Ten" student-athletes, announce the winners of the Commissioner's Trophies.
