Dixon, Berniece S. (Cleveland)

Berniece S. Dixon, 101, of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed away Sunday June 26, 2016 at the family residence.

She was the daughter of the late Benjamin C. and Lydia Hemsath Shattuck; and was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Dixon; her sister, Lillian Snyder; her brother, Williard Shattuck; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Edith and Dwight Hartwell.

She attended Seward City Schools riding in a horse and buggy. During the war she worked as a welder on tankers in the Sausalito Ship Yards. While in California she met her future husband Carl and moved to Tennessee where she lived ever since. She worked for Cabin Crafts (West Point) in Dalton GA., for 31 years as secretary to the plant manager. Getting close to retirement age she decided to study to become an income tax preparer. Getting her certificate from H and R Block she worked, managed and taught taxes for 17 years. When she retired she continued her business for another 15 years until her doctor told her she had to quit because of heart problems. She was raised a United Brethren (Methodist) but attended the Baptist church in Tennessee.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Queen and her husband Charles of Cleveland; her two sons, Clifford Dixon and his wife Dorothy of Cleveland and Carl Dixon Jr. of Palm Springs CA., and Cleveland TN; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Remembrance of Life Service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29 at Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services Wildwood Ave. Chapel with Rev. Luther Eslinger officiating. The interment will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Jim Rush Funeral Home, who has charge of the arrangements.
