The Grainger Foundation, an independent, private foundation located in Lake Forest, Il., has donated $15,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga.

“This grant was used to sponsor an event on the Southern Belle Riverboat for Bigs, Littles, community partners and potential volunteers.  With over 180 in attendance, guests enjoyed dinner, an inspiring message by Board Member and McCallie School Associate Headmaster, Troy Kemp, an engaging magic show and beautiful view along the Tennessee river during the two-hour ride.  In addition, it will also help upgrade technology within the organization” said Theresa Varos, executive director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga. "We are grateful to The Grainger Foundation for its generosity.”

Ms. Varos said these programs serve children ages six through 18 in Bradley, Marion, Hamilton, Catoosa, Dade and Walker counties.  "As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers ('Bigs') and children ('Littles')."

This donation was recommended by Steve Garrison, branch manager of W.W. Grainger, Inc.’s, Chattanooga location.  Grainger has been a part of the Chattanooga business community for more than 42 years as a broad line supplier of maintenance, repair, and operating products.  “We are proud to recommend the programs offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Chattanooga” said Mr. Garrison.  “We understand the need for more volunteers, especially men.  With 150 children waiting to be matched, 80% are boys.”

"You, don’t have to change your life to change the life of a child’s life. Through simple friendship. 'Bigs' experience the joy of helping children discover a world of possibilities and opportunities," officials said.
