  • Tuesday, September 20, 2016
CLARKESVILLE, Ga. -- Marshall Kent fired a career-best 70 and sits just one shot off the lead and the Covenant men's golf team is in a tie for fourth place overall at the end of round one of the Piedmont Fall Invitational at The Orchard Golf & Country Club.

As a team, Covenant shot a 310 in the opening round and sits in a tie for fourth in the eight-team field with Truett-McConnell. Sewanee leads the event with a 294 team score. Bob Jones and host Piedmont are in a tie for second after both teams scored a 308.

Kent finished his round at 2-under par and is one stroke behind the clubhouse leader, Tommy Oliver of Sewanee, and sits in second place by himself. The sophomore was consistent throughout the round carding three birdies during the day. The 70 bests Kent's previous career-low of 73 which was also set at the Piedmont Fall Invitational last year. Garrett Rowland of Piedmont was the only other golfer to break par in the first round with his 1-under 71.

Kent was not the only Covenant golfer to finish in the top 10 after the first round as Nathan Hawkins posted a 5-over 77 on day one and is 10th heading into Tuesday's final round. Alan Craig shot a 79 on Monday, while Will Reid carded an 84 to round out the top four Covenant golfers. Will Mayfield finished the first round with an 86.
