Arte Culver Resigns As Covenant Men's Basketball Coach

Covenant men's basketball head coach Arte Culver has resigned from the position in order to pursue other collegiate coaching opportunities, announced director of athletics Tim Sceggel on Friday.

A national search for a new head coach has begun.

In Culver's lone season at Covenant, he guided the Scots to a second consecutive winning season with a 14-12 overall record and a berth in the USA South Tournament.
In his debut, Culver and the Scots defeated No. 15-ranked Emory, 74-70, on Nov. 15, 2016. The 14-12 record marked the best record of any first-year head coach in program history.

"I'm grateful to Arte for the work he did over the last year as he sought to disciple young men in the context of basketball, while pursuing excellence on the court and bringing in a strong recruiting class for this year," Sceggel said. "When Arte was hired, we knew that he was a rising star in this profession, so it is no surprise that another institution has invited Arte to join their staff."

Covenant had one All-USA South honoree (Patjo Twagirayezu) and a three-time USA South Rookie of the Week winner (Caleb Haynes) during the year. Culver's team was also awarded the USA South Team Sportsmanship Award, the second straight year Covenant earned the honor in men's basketball.

In the classroom, Culver's team had seven selections to the USA South All-Academic team, matching a program-best since entering the conference in the 2013-14 academic year.
