Alice Probasco Lupton, longtime civic leader who helped found the Creative Discovery Museum, died on Thursday at age 90.

She chaired golf's Curtis Cup at the Honors Course established by her late husband, Jack Lupton.

Mrs. Lupton was born in Chattanooga on April 26, 1927 and was educated at The Bright School, GPS, The Masters School, and Wellesley College.

She was an advocate for children while presiding over the boards of East Fifth Street Day Care Center, Little Miss Mag Day Care Center, and The Children's Home (now Chambliss Center for Children).

She felt it a great accomplishment that each of these organizations became racially integrated under her presidency.

Perhaps her greatest contribution to the children of our community was her leadership in establishing The Creative Discovery Museum on whose board she served for many years. Other organizations that benefited from her leadership include United Way, Allied Arts (now ArtsBuild), The Bright School, GPS, and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Lupton was a very active member of The Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain. She established The Good Shepherd Book Store which for many years helped support the church preschool. She served on the vestry of Christ Memorial Chapel in Hobe Sound, Fla.

In addition to her involvement in the Curtis Cup, a women's amateur event between the U.S. and Great Britain, she herself was an excellent golfer. She won the first Tennessee Women's Senior Championship.

She was predeceased by her parents, Scott L. and Margaret Williams Probasco, her husband Jack Lupton to whom she was married for 62 years, and her brother Scotty Probasco.

Mrs. Lupton is survived by one son Cartter Lupton and his wife George from Sullivan's Island, S.C., and three daughters, Alice Smith and her husband Alfred from Lookout Mountain, Kate Juett from Dallas, and Meg Gerber and her husband Charles from Memphis. She is also survived by her sister Peggy Jones. Her grandchildren and their spouses are Tom and Kristina Montague, John and Jessica Montague, Ben and Sandy Crosland, Andy and Adriane Crosland, Ali and Justin Treaster, John and Danyelle Lupton, Betsey Lupton and Eric Chevalier, Charlie and Hayley Gerber, Annie and Paxton Griffin, Robin and Kyle Collins, and Jack Gerber. She had 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, Tn., with the Reverend Robert Childers officiating. There will be a reception at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club after the service.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Creative Discovery Museum, 321 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402, Chambliss Center for Children, 315 Gillespie Road, Chattanooga, TN 37411, The Church of the Good Shepherd, P.O. Box 145, Lookout Mountain, TN 37350 or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home – East Brainerd Chapel, 7454 E. Brainerd Road.
