Lee University’s Opera Theatre To Perform “The Consul”

  • Thursday, February 15, 2018

Lee University School of Music’s Opera Theatre will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Consul” at the Dixon Center on Feb. 23-26. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, with a matinee at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The production is under the artistic direction of Lee University Associate Professor of Voice James Daniel Frost and directed by James Daniel Frost II.

"The Consul” is a three-act opera and was first produced in 1950 at Schubert Theatre in Philadelphia. The composer and librettist, Menotti, won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Music and also the 1950 New York Drama Critics' Circle award for Best Musical for this specific opera. “The Consul” deals with the social issue of immigration in an unidentified totalitarian country.

“This work was written shortly after WWII and remains incredibly relevant today as it explores the lives and struggles of very real people within a very real system of oppression and surveillance,” said James Daniel Frost II. “Menotti has created a beautiful, emotional landscape with his music, which I am helping the performers discover and interpret as their own. I have worked to create an environment in which the audience and performers can experience this very present story together.”

Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $3 for students and are available at the Dixon Center Box Office, Monday through Friday, 3-6 p.m. The box office can be reached by calling 614-8343. Tickets are also available at https://www.showclix.com/event/the-consul. Seating is limited.

Due to the serious nature of the subject matter, this performance is recommended for persons over the age of 13.
