For the third year in a row, ETC has partnered with the Hunter Museum for Casting the Canvas, a night of short plays inspired by six works of art. What began in 2016, has blossomed into a growing partnership and a melding of visual and theatrical art.
Featuring the works of five local playwrights, the stories range from a comedic and whimsical look at creation to a dystopian commentary on societal structures. Sticking with the overall theme of ETC’s season, each playwright was asked to keep family in mind while writing their plays.
ETC’s Communications Director, Casey Keelen, helms the project for her third time, “I have loved this project since its inception. As artists, it’s so important for us to not only support each other, but to feed each other’s artistic sensibilities. To be able to create a piece of theatrical art from a piece of visual art is so special, because it is the perfect example of two artists, with different viewpoints, coming together to create separate and unique pieces that are, at the core, intertwined.”
The series of short plays will be performed twice on the ETC stage at Barking Legs Theater and once at the Hunter Museum. The Hunter Museum performance will take viewers on a guided trip through the museum, stopping and performing each play in front of the piece that served as the inspiration.
The performances will be Monday and Tuesday at Barking Legs Theater at 7:30 p.m. and May 10 at Hunter Museum of American Art at 6 p.m.
Barking Legs Theater is at 1307 Dodds Ave. and the Hunter Museum of American Art is at 10 Bluff View Ave.
