Covenant Tennis Team Sweeps Berea 9-0

  • Thursday, April 5, 2018
For a second time this year, the Covenant women's tennis team recorded a 9-0 victory over Berea as the Lady Scots earned the regular season sweep on Thursday night at the Wilson Evans Tennis Complex.

Covenant moves to 9-8 overall on the year and 4-2 in the USA South. The win also clinched the No. 3 seed from the West for the Lady Scots in next week's USA South Tournament in LaGrange, Ga.

Covenant fought off a pesky Berea (1-9, 1-6 USA South) team in the two of the three doubles matches, but swept doubles play to take a 3-0 match lead.
After Annie DeLuca and Esther Eddy cruised to an 8-0 win over Alicia Bedolla and Erin Goodpaster at the top spot, Mackenzie Jones and Mariah Westra defeated Ashley Ferrell and Agnes Dotse 8-4 at the second flight. Masha Lanska and Kayla Brown then outlasted Marranne Conge and Jaden Johnson, 8-6, at No. 3.

In the singles portion, Covenant controlled play throughout. DeLuca was back at the No. 1 position for a second straight night and took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Bedolla. The singles win was the 13th for DeLuca on the year.

Eddy bested Goodpaster 6-1, 6-0 at the second position, while Jones was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Ferrell at No. 3. Lanska added a 6-2, 6-1 win against Dotse at the fourth spot, and Westra took down Conge in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5. Brown completed the sweep with her 6-3, 6-4 win over Johnson at No. 6.

The singles victories for Brown and Westra were their first career wins.

Covenant will play its third match in as many days on Friday at home against Maryville at 4 p.m. Senior Day activities will take place before the match as the program recognizes Aly Hall, DeLuca, Jones, and Jennie Spielman.
