Longtime Chattanoogan Was Active In Her Church

Doris Gilstrap Callahan, 93, of Hixson, passed away at home and went to be with her Lord on Monday, September 24, 2018, surrounded by her loving family.

She had lived in Burning Bush community and graduated from Ringgold High School in 1942. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison “Harry” Gilstrap and Jewel Holsomback Gilstrap; brother, Herman O. Gilstrap who was killed in WWII in France; sisters, Betty Cavin, Irene Crowe; her loving husband of 68 years, Reverend Herman Eugene Callahan; son-in-law, Hutch Lewis.

Doris is survived by her three daughters, Janet (Truman) Anderson, Donna Lewis, and Cindy (L. Bruce) Crumbliss; grandchildren, Jennifer Janow Crawley and H. Bruce Crumbliss; several nieces and nephews.

She was a wonderful loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Doris also served in many capacities including minister’s wife, leader of Women’s Missionary Auxiliary, teacher of Bible studies and member of church choirs. She was a current member of Red Bank Baptist Church.

Doris always demonstrated and shared her love for the Lord Jesus through her actions and words. She lived her daily life to the honor and glory of Jesus Christ. 

The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

A memorial service for Doris will follow at 1 p.m. on Friday at the North Chapel with Reverend Terry Shannon and Brian Crowe officiating. 

A private burial will be held at National Cemetery for Doris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris’ name to Red Bank Baptist Church Missions, 4000 Dayton Blvd., Chattanooga, Tn. 37415 or to your favorite charity.
