John Houston
John Farris Houston, 72, of LaFayette, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019.
He was a Vietnam War veteran of the U.S. Army and a helicopter pilot. John was recently employed by the Walker County School System as a paraprofessional. He was an active member and deacon of the LaFayette First Baptist Church, a member of the choir and hand bell choir, and taught the Adult 4 Men Sunday School class. John was a gifted writer and had an intense love for his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard “Lefty” Houston and Venice “Happy” Houston.
Survivors include his daughter, Kathryn (Edward) Pankey; son, Patrick Houston both of Virginia; companion, Phyllis Maddox; sister, Jan (Ralph) Waldrop of LaFayette; grandchildren, Valencia, Michael, Brayden and Ryan Pankey; niece, Katie (Dairl) Cooper; nephew, Matt (Amy) Waldrop; and great nephews, Jack and Sam.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the LaFayette First Baptist Church with a gathering of family and friends prior to the service after 1 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to the First Baptist Church Family Life Center Fund, 201 N. Main Street, LaFayette, Ga. 30728.
