The McCallie varsity squash team opened its competitive season with a tough scrimmage match against a very strong McCallie alumni team, hosted by Scenic City Squash Club.
The pre-match chat around the club was that the alumni team would be "too experienced" for the new-look, and very young (only one senior) varsity team. But members of the varsity team showed the results of the hard work they have been putting in with Coaches Dan Sharplin and Bryon McCague during the fall to record an upset 6-3 win.
Coach Sharplin was very pleased with his players. "This was exactly what we needed. The boys took this match seriously and really wanted a 'W' to get our season started on the right foot. There were some very close matches that could have gone either way. I was proud of how the boys listened to instructions, made in-game adjustments and fought hard to the very end. A huge thank you to the alumni for making themselves available to play against us!"
