The Covenant softball team produced 21 hits in Wednesday's doubleheader at Sewanee as the Scots earned a split with the host Tigers. Covenant took game one, 7-2, before falling 3-2 in the finale.
Covenant goes to 4-10 on the year, while Sewanee (1-1) opened its season.
Jordan Holman had a combined six hits in the two games, including going 4-for-4 in game one.
GAME ONE: Covenant 7, Sewanee 2
Covenant scored three runs in the first and took a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth as the Scots eased to a 7-2 win in Wednesday's opener.
Holman went 4-for-4 with a run scored, while Faith Manning was 3-for-4 and Aileen Hill 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Covenant had 11 hits in the contest.
Sewanee miscues in the field helped Covenant score three runs in the first inning. The Tigers made three errors in the frame, while Holman and Manning had singles in the inning. In the second, it was an RBI single from Hill and a Tori Layfield sacrifice fly that brought home Baylie Sims to make it 5-0.
The Scots added a run in the fourth on a Hill RBI double before another Sewanee error allowed the seventh run to cross the plate.
That was plenty for Covenant starter Lauren Kierpa (4-6). The right-hander went the distance and struck four while scattering five hits and allowing two runs to collect the win.
Alice Charboneau had three hits and a homer to lead Sewanee. Michaela Walker (0-1) got the loss in the circle.
GAME TWO: Sewanee 3, Covenant 2
Covenant had 10 hits in game two, but could not rally from a two-run deficit in a 3-2 loss in the finale.
The Scots struck first in the second inning on Taylor Murdock's RBI single, but Sewanee answered with three runs in the third to grab a 3-1 lead.
Covenant trimmed the deficit to one on a Holman RBI double that scored Emma Giller in the fifth inning.
Jennifer Coates (0-3) made the start for the Scots and went 4.1 innings allowing just two earned runs. Kierpa tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Holman, Layfield, and Makenna Dance all had two hits for Covenant, which outhit Sewanee 10-7. Sarah Wright was 3-for-3 for Sewanee with an RBI.
Kendell Goodrum (1-0) went five innings for Sewanee to pick up the win.
Covenant hosts Wesleyan for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
