Mattie Idella Jensen Hicks, of Chattanooga, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at a local health care facility.
She was known to many as "Granny." She was born April 12, 1922, in Athens, Ala., but had lived most of her life in Chattanooga.
She was a charter member of Calvary Church of the Nazarene, having held many service positions, including Sunday school teacher, president of the Missionary Society and organist. She was the former owner of Plaza Card and Gift Shop.
She was preceded in death by George R. Jensen Jr., her husband of 41 years; Carl Hicks, her husband of five months; her parents, George and Eliza Woody; and 12 brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Peoples and husband Leon; son, Mr. Richard Jensen and wife Damarest, all of Chattanooga; granddaughters, Mrs. Kimberly Hughes of Ringgold, Ga., Cherith Hibbs and husband Shawn of Nashville; grandsons, Richard Lowe of Chattanooga, Dr. David Jensen and wife Beth of Chattanooga; three great-granddaughters; and four great-grandsons; brother, J. "Coy" Woody of Chattanooga; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Woody and Mildred Woody; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
A service of celebration will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday at Calvary Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Mike Campbell, Dr. LeBron Fairbanks and Dr. Larry Fairbanks officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
She will lie in state at the church prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 1:30-4 and 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel, 601 Ashland Terrace.
