Ted Charles Sheets, 83, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007.

Born in Akron, Ohio, he later moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he spent much of his adult life. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1941 and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan in 1947 with a bachelor of science in engineering.

He was a veteran of World War II and served in Europe in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Ted was a registered professional engineer in Ohio and, when taking the exam to be certified in 1951, received the highest score in the state. He was employed by the Kimble Division of the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, Johns-Manville Glass Fibers, and later was president of Midwest Fluid Power Company.

Upon moving to Chattanooga in 1980, he retired from Cross Sales and Engineering of Greensboro, N.C., after a distinguished career as a consulting engineer. He earned the Nathan Gilbert Award for outstanding service in 1991. He was president of the Detroit chapter of the Fluid Power Society and was a lifetime member and chairman of the Toledo section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Ted was a member of First Christian Church and a board member of the Chattanooga City Farmers Club.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughter, Laura, and her husband, James Kroeger; sons, Tom and his wife, Catherine, and Charles and his wife, Elizabeth; son-in law, Lewis Pyenson, husband of the late Susan Sheets-Pyenson; grandchildren, Amanda Ballard, Nicholas Pyenson, Amy Sheets, Andrew Kroeger, Kathleen Sheets, Catharine Pyenson, James Kroeger and Benjamin Pyenson; and stepgrandchildren, Saran Cochran and Steve Winze.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Paul Rebelo of First Christina Church officiating.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Toledo Memorial Park and Cemetery, Toledo, Ohio, with Dr. Phillip Jones of First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, Ohio, officiating.
