The Theta Phi Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority at UTC has successfully lived one of their core values of service over the past semester in a series of events that model service and leadership in the Chattanooga community.

Members began the semester by supporting the local Alzheimer’s Association during their annual Memory Walk by raising approximately $1,200 and volunteering with registration and assisting with activities during the event.

In early October, the chapter held their Ultra Violet Campaign where members of the UTC community helped raise over $5,600 that will be donated to support Alzheimer’s disease/Gerontology, one of the sorority’s national philanthropies.  Sigma Kappa’s Ultra Violet Week included events such as a softball tournament and a “Dove in Disguise” men’s pageant competition, resulting in a record breaking amount of funds that were raised during the chapter’s annual philanthropy week.

“I’m so proud to be part of an organization that is so deeply committed to community service and philanthropy projects,” shared Vice President of Philanthropic Services of Theta Phi, Monica Shubert.  “Many people don’t know how much Greeks spend supporting local and national philanthropies.  They think of sororities and fraternities solely as a social organization, when in fact we are about personal growth, service, loyalty, and friendship.”

Later in October and early November, the women participated in their annual “Week of Giving” by giving back to the campus and local community in a variety of ways. Members of Sigma Kappa could be seen around campus passing out candy on Halloween to fellow students, delivering cards to those that have influenced and/or inspired them, and providing baked goods to faculty members.  The chapter handmade over 150 cards that were delivered to two local retirement homes, Life Care Center of Red Bank and Alexian Brothers.  They visited the Achieve Learning Center at the Chattanooga Speech & Hearing Center to trick-or-treat with the children to let them practice their speech and language skills.

“We were thrilled to have Sigma Kappa sisters participate in our preschool’s trick-or treating event this year,” said Connie Fernandez, the Center’s associate director.  “The kids loved meeting the girls, and because of their commitment, Sigma Kappa made this years’ event the biggest we’ve had.”

Jennie Sumrell, Theta Phi’s Advisory Board chairman shared, “These collegians are truly making an impact in our community, and they are going to be graduating from college knowing that the more your give, indeed the more you receive.  I am thankful for their dedication and for the outstanding work they have accomplished on campus, in our community, and nationally within our organization."

Theta Phi members have collectively given over 3,000 community services hours to the Chattanooga community during 2012.
