Girls Inc. Announces Honorees For 9th Annual UnBought And UnBossed Awards

  • Monday, December 10, 2012

Named for the phrase coined by Shirley Chisholm during her historic run for the 1972 democratic presidential nomination, the UnBought & UnBossed Awards honor local women who through their career acheivement and/or community involvement have made a significant impact on the lives of women and girls. Community members submit nominations of women residing in Hamilton County and the 10 honorees are chosen by 10 high school-aged girls participating in Girls Inc.'s Women History Project.

The 2013 honorees are:

Sheila C.

Boyington
, president, Thinking Media

Sheri A. Fox, attorney, Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz P.C.

Gloria J. Griffith, board member, Westside Community Association

Charline Kilpatrick, treasurer, Glenwood Neighborhood Watch

Pam Ladd, city councilmember, City of Chattanooga

Carol K. O'Neal, administrative clerk of the City Council, City of Chattanooga

Molly Sasse, executive director, Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra

Stacy Talwar, educational consultant, Institute for Research and Reform in Education

Sue Anne Wells, founder, Mustang Leadership Partners

As part of the Women's History Project, girls learn about the history of women's rights in the United States, about Shirley Chisholm and the traits of leaders.  This  foundational information is the basis for the girls to select an honoree that inspires them from the community nominations. In addition, the participants hone their interview, research and public speaking skills as they develop moving presentations to deliver in tribute to the Unbought and Unbossed honorees at the annual awards breakfast in March. Past participants have created original art, written poetry and made videos to showcase the life of their honoree.

Girls participating in this year's Women's History Project are: Ebonee Chappell (11th grade at East Ridge High School), Alexis Dozier (9th grade at Red Bank High School), Alexis Eaton (10th grade at CSAS), Sophie Epstein (12th grade at GPS), Khadesha Gordon (12th grade at CSAS), Emily Horton (12th grade at Hixson High School), Taylor Jackson (10th grade at CSAS), Antinea Jones (12th grade at Brainerd High School), Jasmine Pulliam (10th grade at CCA) and Terri Wright (ninth grade at CCA).

The ninth annual UnBought & UnBossed Awards breakfast will be held on Friday, March 15 from 7:30-9 a.m. in The Chattanoogan ballroom.
