Democrat Lawrence G. "Larry" Miller of Hixson has filed to qualify for the primary ballot in the race for Tennessee House of Representatives District 26, a seat currently held by Republican Gerald McCormick.

Dr. Miller, who holds a Ph.D. in educational administration and leadership from the University of Texas at Austin, and who recently retired from his position as chief academic officer and interim chief student officer at Snead College in Boaz, Ala., said he "believes in the statewide call to revitalize the Democratic Party."

“I really want people to have legitimate options for elected offices.

Democrats need to stand up and make our voices heard,” he said.

He describes himself as center-leaning and fully willing to work within the legislature for “the greater good.”

Dr. Miller spoke of a focus on three areas as a candidate:

• Aiding the Tennessee economy to become fully functional and fully prepared to move forward into the future.

• Focusing upon the educational institutions that will support the new economy.  “Voters in the 26th District will support real school reform, as well as halting the erosion of support for our colleges and universities,” he stated.

• Healthcare as an issue with major local importance. “There is much to be done to improve the health and quality of life that has nothing to do with Obamacare,” Miller said.

Dr. Miller’s background also includes an M.Ed in educational technology from the University of Arkansas. He was the learning strategist and lead organizational development specialist for Erlanger Health System for two years, the director of continuing medical education at the UT College of Medicine for six years, and held multiple positions at Chattanooga State Technical College, including vice president for institutional advancement from 1994-1998.
