Former Captain With Sheriff's Department & State Highway Patrol

Gene Hughes, also known as “Powpow” died on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at his Ooltewah home, at the age of 85.

 

Born on the family farm in Ooltewah on July 7, 1927 to the late Herbert and Ethel Beech Hughes, he was a graduate of Ooltewah High School and served in the US Army 25th Infantry in Japan.

 

After returning from service he was employed with DuPont and later for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Dept. where he rose to the rank of Captain.  From there he went to the Tennessee Highway Patrol and retired as Captain.

 

After his retirement, he served as Deputy U.S. Marshall but continued his farming and the culmination led to his being inducted in the Hamilton County Agriculture Hall of Fame.

 

He held memberships with the Fraternal Order of Police, served as Vice President of the Tennessee Highway Patrol Retired Officers Association, Tennessee Law Enforcement Officers Association, American Association of State Troopers, Farm Bureau Board as an honorary lifetime member, Bradley County Co-op Board, VFW Post 4848, served as officer of elections at Meadowview Precinct for over 25 years and was a member of Savannah United Methodist Church.

 

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Glenn B. Hughes.

 

Survivors are his wife of 30 years, Patsy Rollins Hughes;  daughters, Jeanne (William) Hixon,  Arlene Hughes;  granddaughters, Robin (Jeff) Campbell, Kimberly Ferguson;  great-grandchildren, Ashlyn and Kolbey Ferguson, Piper and Will Campbell;  step-children, Doug (Kathy) Murray and Mike (Teresa) Murray.

 

Services will be held Wednesday, July 18, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ronnie Powell and Pastor Glenn Moseley officiating. Interment will follow at Old McDonald Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be retired  members of the Tennessee State Troopers Department.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga or the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Parkridge Medical Center.

 

The family would like to thank Dr. Gandhi, his staff, Leslie, Vicki and Hospice for their wonderful care.
