Lifelong Chattanoogan Held Long Career At DuPont

Johnie Ray Askew, 85, died on Monday, March 25 at his home in Chattanooga. 

A lifelong Chattanoogan, he was retired from DuPont Nylon after 40 years of service.

Johnie was a member of New Salem Baptist Church, where he served as head usher and also served on several committees. He was a 60-year (lifetime) member of John Henry Pierce Masonic Lodge, held 32nd degree in Scottish Rite and was in Alhambra Shrine.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a Torpedoman in World War II.

Mr. Askew was preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Hall) Askew; parents, Robert and Verna Askew; sisters, Ruth Askew (Albert) Mullis, Chickamauga, Robbie Askew (Paul) Parham, Chattanooga, and June Askew (Bernard) Reed of Section, Al.; brothers, Robert Askew Jr., Chattanooga; Jack (Lucille) Askew, Gadsden, Al., Bill (Virginia) Askew, Chicago, and O.S. “Sam” (Martha) Askew, Tiftonia.

Survivors include a son, Jeff Askew of Chattanooga; daughter, Amy (Tim) Jollay of Soddy Daisy; daughter-in-law, Donna Askew of Ringgold; granddaughter, Brittany Askew (Dustin) Carpenter, Brunswick, Ga.; granddaughter, Michala Askew of Ringgold; grandsons, Corey Kirksey of Chattanooga and Daniel Jollay, Soddy Daisy.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at the North Chapel. 

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 28, at 11:30 a.m. at the North Chapel with Reverend Donald Vincent and Reverend Ted Painter officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimers’ Association, 7625 Hamilton Park Drive #22, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421, or The American Cancer Society, 6221 Shallowford Rd. #102, Chattanooga, Tn. 37421  

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 347343.
