  • Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Chattanooga State Community College announces the addition of Caroline Covington, assistant professor of art, in the Fine Arts Department. Covington earned B.A. degrees in Sculpture and Art History from the University of Georgia. Before moving to East Tennessee, she earned an M.F.A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

According to Darrin Haasevoort, Chattanooga State interim dean of Humanities and Fine Arts, “Ms. Covington brings a vibrant lecture-style to the classroom that will engage students in critical discussions of contemporary art, architecture, and museum studies as she relates her own experiences in studying art history abroad in places like Germany and Russia.

The first of the two new courses to be offered is ARTP 1120 Three Dimensional Design. In this course students will learn about various design elements as they operate in three-dimensional form. Class projects will focus on real space and three-dimensional reality, involving both relief and freestanding forms.

The other course is ARTP 2991 Special Topics in Art: Tools and Techniques. This seven-week course, which runs from October 16 through December 12, will introduce students to a variety of new tools and equipment available in the sculpture department. It will also highlight new ways of safely utilizing woodworking and metalworking tools in all types of artistic practices. This class is open not only to art students, but to all students. The class will be held in the newly dedicated art facility in the former Olan Mills warehouse on the main campus.
