Alexander Wants Full Debate On Extending Unemployment Benefits

  • Sunday, January 5, 2014

Senator Lamar Alexander  released the following statement on the U.S. Senate’s upcoming vote on Monday to consider legislation to extend long-term unemployment benefits:

“I will not vote to bring this legislation to the floor unless senators have an opportunity to debate and vote on the many good ideas for helping unemployed Americans find a job.

Unfortunately, the Senate appears to be starting the new year just like the old one ended, with the Democratic leader bypassing committee consideration and cutting off all amendments and debate on an important issue.”

Senator Alexander is a cosponsor of the Workforce Investment Act, bipartisan legislation that he said would provide job training to help Tennesseans get back to work. The legislation has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, of which Senator Alexander is the lead Republican.
