Dalton State is in its first season of competition in the Southern States Athletic Conference and the cross country program is already getting plenty of recognition from the conference.

Spencer Head, a Dalton State runner from Camas Washington, was recognized Tuesday as the SSAC men’s cross country runner of the week.

Roadrunner co-coaches Margie Bruner and Andy Meyer have said the junior has had an incredible first two weeks of the season.

The conference runner of the week led the way Friday as the Dalton State men finished second only to NCAA D-II Columbus State in the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville.

Head’s fifth place finish in the four-mile run at 21:16.64 was on top of a sixth place finish (15:35) the week before and another second place for the team. Only the University of Tennessee bested the Roadrunner men’s squad in the PowerAde Invitational 5k on September 5th.

“We are very proud of Spencer,” said Bruner. “He is a talented runner who works hard. It’s good to see that him recognized and rewarded.”

Head became the first Dalton State athlete in any sport to receive honors from the conference.

Brittany Aikens, a senior at Brenau University, was named the SSAC Women Cross Country Runner of the Week.  Dalton State freshman Gloria Pascual had been nominated for the honor.
