Lee Theatre To Present The Importance Of Being Earnest

The Lee University theatre program will open the 2014-15 season with a production of the Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, a play featuring “secret identities.” The show will run Oct. 3-4 and 9-10 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. and will be performed in the Buzz Oates Theatre, located in the new Communication Arts Building.

The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by Dr. Christine Williams, associate professor of theatre, features two men, each falsely claiming the name Ernest and an earnest disposition. In addition, the cast includes two women, each in love with her earnest Ernest, as well as a forgetful nanny, a humorous matriarch, and various others. With a blend of unique characters, family secrets, and covert identities, the Importance of Being Earnest has become a celebrated comedy for the stage. 

"We are excited to produce this classic comedy in the new theatre space in the Communication Arts Building," said Dr. Williams. "The production will be in the round and our audience will have a wonderful time experiencing this play in the Buzz Oates Theatre.” 

The new black box theatre allows the opportunity for “in the round” viewing which means the audience surrounds the staging area on all sides. 

Tickets will be available at the Box Office located in the lobby of the Communication Arts Building or by phone at 614-8360. The Box Office is open Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m., and tickets will be available during Box Office hours and one hour before curtain time. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children, seniors, and students.
