Former Centennial Sportsplex Employee Charged With Stealing At Least $95,310

  • Tuesday, September 30, 2014

An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has charged former special programs coordinator Blain Smith stole at least $95,310 from Nashville’s Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center. Comptroller investigators worked in conjunction with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department on this case.

During the period May 2010 through February 2014, it was charged that Smith stole money by diverting and depositing into his personal bank accounts at least 79 checks made payable to the Sportsplex. Examples can be found in the investigative report.

Smith admitted to investigators that he deposited these checks into his personal accounts, and used the money for his personal benefit.

The Davidson County Grand Jury indicted Smith on Friday on one count of theft over $60,000 and one count of official misconduct.

The Metropolitan Nashville Office of Internal Audit detailed internal control deficiencies that allowed this theft to occur in a report issued July 28, 2014. To view this report click here

“The theft of public money should be concerning to all taxpayers,” said Comptroller Justin P. Wilson. “The indictment issued by the Davidson County Grand Jury should send a message that those who steal will be held accountable.”
