Signal Students Win Big At Region Chess Tournament

Signal Mountain schools produced several winners in Tennessee's Region 2 Scholastic Chess Tournament held Saturday, Jan. 24, in Crossville and will proceed to the State Scholastic Chess Tournament on Feb. 14.

Six local students placed in the Top 10 in the Primary section (grades K-3) with Oliver Nimon, a Nolan 3rd-grader winning the 1st-place trophy. Thrasher student Mark Nashi placed 2nd. Other local winners in this division were Evan Miller, 4th, Thrasher; Parker Wilson, 7th, Nolan; Tate Harrison, 9th, Nolan; and Andrew Milz, 10th, Thrasher.

In the Elementary section (grades 4-6), Thrasher students Erol House placed 3rd with Ian Campbell in 4th place and Nolan 5th-grader Trever McGhie in 6th place.
 

Signal Mountain Middle School student George Andreescu placed 2nd in the Junior High division. He will also proceed to the state tournament.

Bill Cheal and Joe Kodsi coach students in the Chess Clubs at the local schools.
