Lee University will welcome Dr. Joe Kickasola on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. for a lecture titled "Flesh, Faith, and Frame: Embodied Christian Aesthetics and the Cinema.” The event, hosted by Lee’s Humanities faculty, will be held in the Johnson Lecture Hall in the Humanities Building.

In his lecture, Dr. Kickasola will explore the relationship between film viewing and spiritual formation. In doing this, he argues that film is an active, embodied, simulative, and multisensory event.

Dr. Kickasola is an associate professor of communication studies at Baylor University. He is the author of “The Films of Krzysztof Kieslowski: the Liminal Image” which won the 2006 Spiritus Award for best writing in the area of religion and film. His other publications include chapters in The Routledge Companion of Philosophy and Film and Experimental Film: The Missing Frames, as well as articles in Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Journal of Moving Image Studies, and Christian Scholars Review, among others. His most recent academic project is his role as guest editor of a Religions Journal issue on the topic of "Film and Lived Theology.”

He frequently speaks on the relationship between faith and art, including a recurring lecture series on “Theology and Film” given at Princeton Seminary. In addition to his teaching, speaking, and publishing, Dr. Kickasola has directed and produced film and video projects for distribution or broadcast around the world. He lives in New York City where he directs the Baylor Communication in New York Program.

This event is free and open to the public. The lecture is part of the Lee University Arts & Culture Series, which is intended to facilitate a conversation between artists, thinkers, and students about the complex relationship between art and faith.
