Betty McGee
Betty Jean McGee, 81, of Hixson, died on February 2, 2015.
She was born on Nov. 5,1933, to the late John Luther McNabb and Lou Bernice Byers McNabb in Isabella, Tn.
Betty Jean, the youngest of five, was a curly-haired, red-headed girl who grew up loving the outdoors.
She was a star athlete, served in student government and was a cheerleader at Ducktown High School in Ducktown, Tn., where in her senior year, she was elected Football Queen. Her school paper noted, “For the first time during our high school career a member of our class was elected Football Queen. Betty Jean, you made a beautiful queen.”
She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Joe Eddie McGee. Together, they raised two children and spent a lifetime building many great memories camping and going on trout fishing trips.
Betty Jean worked at the Hixson High School cafeteria for 30 years and loved her time with the students. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She taught her grandchildren how to fish, sew and cook, as well as sharing her favorite piece of advice, “You’ve got to learn to laugh.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. McGee, daughter, Pamela Orrell, of Chattanooga, and her sisters, Katherine Coleman of Chattanooga, and Jimmie Long of Turtletown, Tn.
She is survived by her siblings, Bill McNabb of Chattanooga, and Helen McFarland of Cleveland; her son, Joe Alan and (Denise) McGee of Tulsa, OK; her grandchildren, Sarah Ramsey, of Tulsa, OK, Jessica Schroeder, of Claremore, OK, (Matt), Corrie McGee, of Franklin, TN, Tessa Cole, of Tulsa, OK, (Mark), Lauren McGee, of Franklin, TN, John McGee, of Tulsa, OK; one great-grandson, Augstus, Schroeder of Claremore, OK, and her son-in-law, Richard Orrell of Chattanooga. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Feb. 6, at 11:30 a.m. at the Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, Hixson. Interment will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Visitation with family and friends will be on Thursday, Feb. 5, from 5-7 p.m. and Friday, from 10-11:30 a.m.
Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson.
