The New Coon Creek Girls
The WoodSongs Dalton 2015 Concert Series will host the New Coon Creek Girls, a Kentucky based bluegrass band, and Jeff and Marcy Paulson at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Stage 123 in downtown Dalton.
Review for the New Coon Creek Girls:
The New Coon Creek Girls were formed in 1979 by John Lair, the founder of Renfro Valley, with the intention of carrying on the traditional music that was played by the original "Coon Creek Girls" on his famous Barn Dance from 1930's-1960's. It didn't take long for Mr. Lair to see that the New Coon Creek Girls’ talents would take them far beyond the walls of Renfro Valley.
After leaving the Valley they traveled extensively, playing and singing their own brand of acoustic music throughout the United States and abroad. For nearly 20 years the NCCG's were a main stay at bluegrass festivals, fairs, concerts and college venues. Although there were several personnel changes over the years, it was the combination of Pam Gadd on vocals, banjo and guitar, Wanda Barnett on vocals, guitar and fiddle, Vicki Simmons on vocals, bass and claw hammer banjo, and Pam Perry Combs on vocals, mandolin and guitar that experienced the most popularity. It is that lineup of women that has come together after a 27 year hiatus.
Tom Brown, WoodSongs Dalton director says of the upcoming concert, "The girls were a real audience favorite last year and I am excited to have them back again this year. They are veteran performers who bring a whole lot of talent and a broad repertoire of songs to the Woodsongs Series."
Review for Jeff and Marcy Paulson:
Opening for the New Coon Creek Girls will be Jeff and Marcy Paulson, who regularly appear with the Tin Cup Rattlers, an old time string band based in Chattanooga. The Paulsons’ soulful renditions of traditional Appalachian music keeps them in demand for appearances at festivals throughout the Southeast. Marcy has placed for two years in a row in the traditional song competition with a voice that some say just stepped out of the 19th century and Jeff’s frailing on the open back banjo can get toes tapping.
A regionally acclaimed concert series, WoodSongs Dalton features emerging and established performers and will be held at Stage 123 located at 123 Gordon St. in the heart of downtown Dalton. The concert series is sponsored in part by the Downtown Dalton Development Authority and the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau. Proceeds from the concert series benefit Providence Ministries, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit faith based organization.
