Bright School is announced that construction has officially begun on the new Augustus “Gus” Morgan McCravey ’01 Athletic Complex, also known as the “GMAC.” The complex will include a 200-meter track and soccer and lacrosse fields, giving the physical education program a new dimension and providing a place for school track, soccer and lacrosse teams to practice and compete.
“This project honors a 2001 graduate of Bright School whose character on and off the field was exemplary,“ said O.J.
Morgan, head of school. “Tragically, Gus succumbed to injuries sustained in an accident following his junior year in college, but his life-giving spirit remains with us still. It is his joyous spirit we want to remember, always. It is our privilege to create the GMAC to honor the memory of a beloved graduate and to create a space where current and future generations of Bright School children will run, play, laugh and grow.”
Mr. Morgan mounted a bulldozer to loosen some dirt for the ceremony. Gus’s parents John ’60 and Georgia, and sister Moira ’03, then took up shovels alongside Morgan to kick off construction on the site. Also present for the festivities were Mark Ramsey, Board of Trustees Chairman, and GMAC Committee Members Zan and Julie Guerry, Ward Davenport, Chris Curtis, Jennifer Young.
All Bright School students participated in the GMAC 200 on April 24, an event comprised of 200 fun activities staged around a painted outline of the new track. More than 200 donors have joined forces in support of the GMAC and the opportunities it will provide for the school, students and the Chattanooga community.
