Tennessee Medical Association Expands Leadership Programs

  • Monday, May 11, 2015

The Tennessee Medical Association has grown its leadership training and professional development programs for physicians, including new course offerings and a rebranding of the Physician Leadership College to the John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership.

TMA and program graduates from across the state held a private gala on Saturday, to honor Dr. John J. Ingram III of Maryville, Tn. and commemorate the official launch of the expanded program.

“Dr. Ingram’s vision, dedication and contributions to leadership in medicine have affected so many physicians in our state,” said John W. Hale, Jr., MD, TMA president and family physician in Union City. “Through the Physician Leadership College, Dr. Ingram helped create a conduit for physicians to learn and grow within their profession, and expand and improve the non-clinical skill set needed to excel in high-level positions. We recognize Dr. Ingram for his individual accomplishments, celebrate his instrumental role in these programs, and look ahead as TMA’s programs evolve to serve the next generation of Tennessee’s physician leaders.”

The Physician Leadership College (now John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership) was originally created to give doctors skills they cannot acquire in medical school or residency training. Participants learn how to become leaders in the healthcare team, in their profession and in their communities.

The institute offers two course tracks to help physicians in any stage in their careers.

·         The Leadership Immersion Weekend Retreat condenses fundamental leadership training into a very accommodating and accessible weekend schedule. TMA is currently accepting applications and nominations for the 2015 Retreat, which will take place July 23-26 in Nashville.

·         The Physician Leadership Lab is a nine-month course that trains physicians with more in-depth curriculum and hands-on projects to lead care teams for improving quality and safety while reducing costs in the clinical setting.

TMA operates the program in partnership with the Tennessee Medical Education Fund, Inc. and underwrites 90% of the costs for physicians to participate.
